About Ms. Z

I am from Williamsburg, Virginia.   I moved to Charlottesville to attend the University of Virginia in 2008.  I fell in love with the Charlottesville/Albemarle area and never left!  I recently became a "Double Hoo," earning my M.Ed. in Counselor Education from UVA in May 2019.
I love helping students identify and build on their strengths to reach their goals.  I am also passionate about service-learning and plan to continue the tradition of service at Red Hill this year.

In my free time I like to bake, read, do art projects, and go for walks. I enjoy being surrounded by greenery, and I have over fifty houseplants!
I look forward to continuing to get to know students, families, and staff this school year!

My School Counseling Philosophy

I believe all students are capable of success when given equitable opportunities at school.  As a school counselor, my goal is to  empower every student to identify and develop their strengths in order to achieve their goals.  I adopt a student-centered, strengths-based approach to help students unlock their personal, social, and academic potential.  I serve as an advocate for students and prioritize equitable access to resources and opportunities.   I strive to create an environment in which students of all backgrounds feel valued and inspired at school.   Creating this environment requires building trusting relationships with students and their families, as well as collaborating with teachers, school staff, and community members.  By being proactive, using data to make informed decisions, and ensuring that all stakeholders feel engaged and heard, I believe we can address individual and systemic barriers to student success.
In addition to advocating on behalf of students and building bridges between school, family, and community, I believe it is crucial to teach students to advocate for themselves.  I encourage students to be creative problem-solvers and to take an active role in their school community; I believe strongly in the ability of service-learning to empower students .   In my own life, I value optimism and believe every person should be the change they want to see in the world.  I believe that by teaching students to identify challenges as opportunities for change, they become stronger students and productive community members.
